Korean Modernization and Current Issues

This course aims to expose students to debates and alternative approaches to development by critically assessing the Korean developmental path. In the first part of this course, Korean modern history is reviewed, starting from the Park Chung Hee regime and its political and economic bureaucracy, often known as one of the main engines of Korea’s rapid economic growth. Less well-known legacies of the regime, such as labour, civil society and women issues, are also critically assessed. The second part of the course deals with more current issues and those issues relating to social integration or inclusion are particularly emphasised: weekly topics will cover today's varied social divisions by work status, age, gender and ethnicity. By end of this course, students will gain deeper understanding of positive and negative legacies of modernization in South Korea.
