Parenteral drug administration refers to drugs given by routes other than the digestive tract. This route is preferred when rapid absorption is essential such as in emergency situations or when patients are unconscious or unable to accept oral medication. It is also preferred when drugs are destroyed or inactivated or poorly absorbed following oral administration.
